CAT 2026

IIM Selection Criteria: CAT 2026 to MBA Admission

IIM admission is a sequence: meet programme eligibility, complete the required application, clear the applicable CAT filters, qualify for further assessment and satisfy the final selection and verification rules. Each IIM publishes its own criteria. CAT eligibility alone does not establish your interview chances or final admission.

Last verified: 7 October 2026. This is an independent preparation guide; applications, admit cards and official notices are available through iimcat.ac.in.

Read selection policies in stages

Keep the shortlisting stage separate from final selection. The same institution may use different factors or weights at those stages.

StageQuestion to answer
EligibilityDo my qualification, marks and documents meet this programme’s rules?
ApplicationHave I applied through the required route by its deadline?
CAT screeningDo I meet both overall and sectional requirements for my category?
ShortlistingHow are academics, experience and other profile factors evaluated?
AssessmentWhat interview or writing process applies?
Final selectionHow is the final score calculated and what verification remains?

Current example: IIM Ahmedabad

The domestic PGP 2027–29 policy considers academic records, gender and full-time work experience in its application rating. It combines that rating with CAT performance and applies discipline-based normalization for shortlisting. Final selection uses 50% normalized interview, 10% normalized writing assessment and 40% normalized composite score. Read the complete policy before calculating an individual result.

How to check the right policy

Start with the institution’s official website and identify the exact programme and intake year. A PGP, specialised MBA and executive programme can have different rules even at the same institution. A previous-year article is not proof of the current process.

Save the policy with the date checked. Record any later amendment beside the original. If a point is ambiguous, ask the institution’s admissions office rather than filling the gap with a coaching prediction.

Prepare a profile record before predicting calls

Gather consistent figures from the documents used in your application. Use the prescribed academic conversion and work-experience definitions; do not assume every internship, part-time assignment or self-employment claim receives identical treatment.

  • Class 10, class 12 and graduation records.
  • University-certified marks or CGPA conversion method.
  • Category and disability documents where applicable.
  • Employment dates and supporting records required by the programme.
  • Programme choices, application acknowledgements and deadlines.
  • Final-year completion requirements if your degree is pending.

Why two candidates with the same percentile can differ

Imagine two applicants with the same CAT percentile but different academic records or recognised work experience. A policy using those inputs can give them different composite scores. If their categories or programmes differ, the applicable screening rules may also differ.

This explains why a one-number call predictor is incomplete. It does not mean a weak academic component makes every programme impossible; build a programme-specific shortlist using the actual rules.

What to do after a shortlist or offer

Read the institution’s communication in full. Track assessment registration, document submission, interview scheduling and any acceptance deadlines separately. A CAT application does not mean every subsequent action is automatic.

Prepare to explain your academic and work background accurately and support claims with documents. If an offer is provisional, list each outstanding condition and its deadline. Follow payment and acceptance instructions only through the institution’s verified channels.

Sources and verification notes

Official sources were checked on 7 October 2026. Later dated notices take precedence over the original bulletin where a deadline has changed. Study plans and worked examples are editorial guidance, not official exam rules.
