IIM Admissions: CAT, Shortlisting, Fees, Cutoffs, and Placements

IIM admission overview

IIM admissions are not based on CAT percentile alone. For the flagship MBA or PGP programmes, CAT is normally the first major screening input, but every IIM publishes its own admission policy for shortlisting and final selection.

Aspirants should treat each IIM separately because the weight given to CAT score, Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation marks, academic diversity, gender diversity, work experience, written test and personal interview can vary widely.

Role of CAT in IIM admissions

CAT is the common entrance test used by the IIMs for domestic flagship MBA/PGP admissions. The official CAT bulletin states that candidates must also check the concerned IIM and programme website for eligibility, admission process and other requirements.

A high CAT percentile can open shortlist opportunities, but it does not guarantee admission because final calls depend on institute-specific composite scores and interview performance.

IIM shortlisting process

Most IIMs first apply minimum sectional and overall CAT percentile cutoffs. Candidates who clear those filters are evaluated using a composite score that may include CAT performance, academic profile, category, work experience and diversity factors.

WAT, PI and final selection

After shortlisting, IIMs typically conduct Personal Interviews and may conduct a Written Ability Test or Analytical Writing Test depending on the institute. Final admission is based on a weighted score, not just interview marks.

IIM fees

IIM fees vary by institute, programme and batch. Older IIMs and newer IIMs may have different fee structures, and the payable amount can include tuition, hostel, academic charges, caution deposit and other components.

Use official fee pages or admission offer documents before publishing exact fee numbers. This platform should avoid stale fee claims unless the fee has been verified against the latest official source.

IIM cutoffs

IIM cutoffs have two layers: qualifying cutoffs and actual shortlist competitiveness. Qualifying cutoffs are minimum eligibility filters, while the percentile required for a real shortlist can be much higher depending on category, profile and institute.

IIM placements

IIM placement data should be quoted only from official placement reports or audited institute releases. Average CTC, median CTC, highest CTC, recruiter count and sector split can vary by programme and batch.

For student decisions, median CTC, role quality, sector distribution, batch size and fee should be read together instead of relying only on highest package headlines.
