CAT Quant Smart Tricks Part 4: Lessons from Tarun Sir's Rodha Session

Tarun Sir's CAT Quant Smart Tricks Part 4 session uses selected CAT 2024 questions to show how recognition, equivalence and structured representation can reduce working time. The session covers remainder theorem, age problems, profit and loss, trapezium geometry, and time-speed questions. The video crossed 1,700 views by November 5, 2026.

Speed in CAT Quant does not come from memorising an isolated shortcut for every question. It develops when a candidate recognises the mathematical structure early and chooses the shortest valid method.

Rodha's Part 4 session with Tarun Sir demonstrates this idea through selected CAT 2024 Quant questions. This article turns the public video outline into an independent revision framework; it does not reproduce the questions or transcript.

What does Rodha's CAT Quant Smart Tricks Part 4 cover?

The session focuses on five recurring areas: remainder theorem, age problems, profit and loss, trapezium geometry, and time and speed. The common thread is method selection rather than a single formula.

Rodha published the video on November 3, 2026. It had 1,766 views when checked on November 5, crossing the automation's 1,000-view threshold.

Candidates can watch the original session for the worked examples and use this guide to build a repeatable practice routine.

What makes a CAT Quant method genuinely smart?

A smart method is valid, understandable and faster under exam pressure. It should reduce algebra or calculation without introducing an assumption that changes the problem.

The best shortcut is often recognition: identify proportional relationships, use a convenient base value, work with answer options, or replace long equations with a compact representation.

Candidates should compare the conventional solution with the shorter route and note when each is safe. A trick that works only after seeing the answer is not yet an exam strategy.

TestQuestion to ask
ValidityDoes the method work for every condition in this question?
SpeedDoes it reduce steps after setup time is included?
ClarityCan I explain why it works?
TransferCan I identify a similar structure in a new problem?

How can remainder questions be solved faster?

Reduce large numbers and powers modulo the divisor before multiplying or expanding. Look for short cycles in powers, factorisation opportunities and expressions that are close to a multiple of the divisor.

Write the modulus clearly. Mental compression can save time, but unclear notation creates sign errors. For a recurring power pattern, list enough terms to prove the cycle before applying it.

During practice, solve the same question once through direct calculation and once through modular reduction. The comparison helps build recognition.

How can age problems be handled without heavy algebra?

Age differences remain constant. This invariant often removes the need to assign several independent variables. Represent present ages with one convenient variable and carry the fixed difference backward or forward.

Ratio statements require care because ratios change with time even though differences do not. Translate each time reference explicitly: present, a stated number of years ago, or a stated number of years later.

If options are numerical and well separated, controlled substitution may be faster than a full equation. Verify every condition before selecting the answer.

What is the equivalence method in profit and loss?

Profit-and-loss questions often become simpler when the cost price is assumed to be 100 or another convenient common multiple. Percentages then convert into direct values, making successive mark-ups, discounts and profit comparisons easier to track.

Keep the base attached to each percentage. A discount applies to marked price, while profit usually compares selling price with cost price. Many errors arise from applying two percentages to the same assumed base.

For successive percentage changes, multiply factors instead of adding percentages. A 20 percent increase followed by a 20 percent decrease does not return to the original value.

StatementUseful representation
20% profitSelling price = 1.20 x cost price
15% discountSelling price = 0.85 x marked price
Successive changesMultiply the corresponding factors
Equal selling pricesUse a common selling-price base if it simplifies comparison

How should candidates approach trapezium geometry?

Start with the parallel sides. Similar triangles, proportional segments and area relationships often appear once a diagonal or auxiliary line is identified.

Avoid importing a diagram property that is not stated. A trapezium is not automatically isosceles, and a drawing may not be to scale. Mark only confirmed parallel lines, lengths and angles.

When coordinates make the structure clearer, place a base on the horizontal axis and use height directly. Choose the representation that minimises unknowns.

How can time-and-speed questions be made more efficient?

Use distance = speed x time, but choose units and base values before forming equations. Relative speed simplifies movement in opposite or same directions, while average speed requires total distance divided by total time.

For equal distances, the harmonic-mean relationship can shorten a two-speed calculation, but candidates should know why it works. If distances differ, return to total distance and total time.

Draw a short timeline or route sketch when stoppages, delayed starts or multiple travellers appear. Ten seconds of structure can prevent several minutes of algebra.

How should students practise smart Quant methods?

Build a method notebook organised by trigger rather than chapter alone. Examples include constant difference, equal distance, cyclic remainder, convenient base and option substitution.

After learning a shorter method, solve two unfamiliar questions without looking at notes. Then revisit the same pattern after several days. This tests whether the recognition has transferred.

In mocks, mark questions where the standard method worked but consumed too much time. These are strong candidates for post-test method comparison.

  • Solve the question with a reliable standard method.
  • Study the shorter valid route.
  • Write the trigger that signals the shorter method.
  • Attempt two related questions without support.
  • Reattempt after three to five days.
  • Use the method only when its conditions are clear.

When should you avoid a shortcut in CAT?

Avoid a shortcut when you cannot justify it, when the options do not support approximation, or when a hidden condition may invalidate the pattern. Under pressure, a familiar full method can be faster than reconstructing a half-remembered trick.

Smart solving also includes leaving a question. If setup remains unclear after a controlled scan, move on and return later. The goal is to maximise the section score, not to prove that every question can be compressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are covered in Rodha CAT Quant Smart Tricks Part 4?

The public chapter outline includes remainder theorem, age problems, profit and loss, trapezium geometry, and time and speed.

Who teaches the Rodha Part 4 session?

The session is taught by Tarun Sir on Rodha's official CAT YouTube channel.

Are shortcuts safe for CAT Quant?

Only when the method is mathematically valid and its conditions are clear. A standard method is preferable to an uncertain shortcut.

How do I improve Quant speed?

Practise structure recognition, compare standard and shorter solutions, reduce calculation, and review slow mock attempts.

Should I memorise every smart trick?

No. Learn reusable triggers and principles so that the method transfers to unfamiliar questions.
